WELFARE TO
W E A L T H
Using behavior science to promote sustainable community development and decrease the welfare dependency rate.
MaKayla Booker
Evidence Based Practice (EBP)
This experiment has been rigorously designed based on scientific evidence research available in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) .
Behavior Skills Training (BST)
By implementing an intervention-based treatment using the four basic steps of BST; instruction, modeling, rehearsal and feedback.
Behavioral Economics
Using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and other related scientific theories to improve human behaviors based on economic decision making.
Welfare Dependency
Decrease
The goal for this experiment is to determine an intervention plan to decrease the number of individuals who are considered "welfare dependent."
RESEARCH PRESENTATION
For nearly 12 consecutive weeks, this experiment has been designed according to the scientific theories and objectives listed below:
Problem Statement
Using behavior science to promote sustainable communtiy development and decrease the "welfare dependency" rate.
Objectives
By the end of this research study individuals will be able to identify one or more ways to generate income, understand and practice financial planning, and participate in one community development-based activity.
Theories
A multidisplinary theoretical design is used, ranging from Applied Behavior Analysis using Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) with evidence-based design.
Evaluation
To evaluate the effectiveness of this experimental design, the participants will be assessed quarterly for 12 months from the completion date of the occupational training program.
WHAT IS ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT (OBM)
Organizational Behavior Management is a subdiscipline of Applied Behavior Analysis which involves the study of analytic procedures and contingencies used to develop behavior change interventions in organizational settings.
PROJECT COMPONENTS
All components listed below add key value to the experimental design for this research study.
Participant application
Our pre-survey determines if applicants qualify to participate in our research study based on pinpointing target areas.
Indirect and Direct Assessments
Applicants who meet the scoring requirements for the study will be placed in study groups based on results from indirect and direct assessments.
Invitation to participate
Based on the previous steps the participant will receive an invitation to participate with specific details pertaining to their study group and next steps.
Class Schedule
All participants will have a class schedule to follow based on enrolled courses and community meetings. Participants are able to choose their class preference.
Individualized Achievement Plan (IAP)
Our original Individualized Achievement Plan (IAP) will be used to create interventions necessary for each participant.
Evaluation Phase
12-months following the date of completion, participants will be evaluated once a month consecutively on their financial and social behaviors..
Chapter One
Chapter one introduces key terms to refer to moving forward, concepts and more regarding the problem statement.
Why is this a problem?
There is a lack of documented evidence supporting fading procedure used to adopt financial independence when receiving welfare or government-based assistance.
What's the solution?
While identifying current financial behaviors, data results can be used to improve individual behavioral economics across time to promote positive financial behaviors.
Background information
McDougald Terrance in Durham, NC was built in 1953 for African-Americans, funded by the Housing Act of 1949. McDougald Terrance today is one of the most crime affiliated neighborhoods in Durham, NC, with nearly 50% of its population falling below the poverty line.
Chapter Two
Chapter two analyzes the research and evaluation process. This chapter also focuses on the supported research designs.
Positive Financial Behaviors
The content in this chapter explains the importance and effectiveness of positive financial behaviors. This is used to identify the demographic variables for statistical reports to illustrate the crisis.
Group/Community Behavioral Therapy
Research shows that groups working together towards common goals with resources are predicted to pursue long-lasting achievements.
Selectionist Theory
The selectionist theory is used to develop based on group social norms and behaviors. The emphasis is placed on the need to take an approach to empowering groups.
Chapter Three
This chapter provides the relation to behavior, social-community and financial behaviors. The process to decreasing the "welfare-dependency" levels is explained.
Project Components
This research study includes a large amount of supporting documents to get the most effective results, such as a pre-survey, session notes, certificate of completion, and more.
Research Evalution
The evaluation phase is during and following the experiment. One check-in response will be collected on a monthly basis for 12 consecutive months following the program completion date.
Plans for implementation
With the support of community organizations and outreach professionals, this study will be conducted with a community-intended impact in mind.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Use this section to navigate through any questions or concerns regarding this research study.
This research design has been developed based on the key principles on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) studying the influence of human behavior based on the environment.
A state of mind used to reference a place as a representation of one's moral character and actions. This typically represents an individual or group who are low in value based on their socioeconomic status and environment.
An individual is determined by state and degree of dependence if they receive 50% or more of family income from one of all of the government-sponsored programs.
All individuals interested in participating in this research study must complete our application. Once completed, a member of our team will reach out to conduct an initial interview and screening.
No, this research study will analyze individuals who are currently receiving supplement income, have received supplement income in the past, or have never received supplement income. Participants are selected based on their responses during the initial screening.
